Mead is one of the oldest drinks in the world: honey, water and yeast, fermented into a golden honey wine that was poured in the halls of Viking chieftains and Anglo-Saxon kings. In The Mead Hall we've gathered some of Britain's best meads in one place, alongside our own Raven Forge Viking meads, so you can find your favourite and have it delivered to your door.

The meaderies we stock

• Lyme Bay Winery. An award-winning British meadery with the widest range on our shelves, from a smooth Traditional Mead to fiery Chilli, tangy Rhubarb, Black Cherry, Ginger, heather-noted Westcountry and minty Garden mead. We also stock Moniack Mead, first produced at Moniack Castle in the Scottish Highlands.
• Lindisfarne. Made at St Aidan's Winery on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, off the Northumberland coast, where the Viking Age began in 793. Try the Traditional, Dark, Spiced, Ginger and Elderflower meads, or Blod Mead.
• Hive Mind. Meads made with 100% honey and nothing else, including a Traditional Mead from Wye Valley honey, a lighter 8% Tavern Mead, a Dark Cherry melomel and a 16% Oak Whisky Barrel-Aged Mead.
• Raven Forge. Our own Viking meads, Berserker, Bloodmoon and Wizard's Mead, each 14.5% ABV and each with a free drinking horn. See the full Raven Forge mead range.

Types of mead

• Traditional mead: honey, water and yeast. Sweet, rich and the best place to start.
• Spiced mead (metheglin): warmed with spices like cinnamon, clove and ginger. Perfect in winter.
• Fruit mead (melomel): fermented or blended with fruit such as cherry or rhubarb, where the tartness cuts through the honey.
• Barrel-aged mead: matured in oak for vanilla, toasted and whisky notes.

How to serve mead

Most meads are lovely lightly chilled or at room temperature. Fruit and herb meads are great over ice, and spiced meads come alive when gently warmed on a cold night. Traditional meads pair well with strong cheeses and hearty casseroles, and lighter meads with dessert. For the full Viking experience, pour it into a drinking horn.

Is mead the same as honey wine? Yes. Mead is often called honey wine, because it's made by fermenting honey rather than grapes.

How strong is mead? The meads in our range run from 8% to 16% ABV, and most sit around 14.5%, similar to a strong wine.
