Description
Originally the Spatha was used by the Roman cavalry and as horsemen were regularly recruited from Gallic tribes the sword owes its origin to the Celts who when recruited were issued chainmail shirts, oval shields, helmets and swords of their own native style.
Early Spathae are depicted on tombstones with hilts and scabbards very close to legionary types. It is likely that the auxiliary cavalry units copied legionary fashions making these swords essentially a hybrid between Celtic and Roman weapon design.
The Spatha began to replace the shorter gladius as the primary Roman sword from about AD.100 onwards. The Romans continued to use their Spathea right up until the decline of the Roman Empire

Great craftnamship. A great addition to my collection.
Ordered on double free gift day. Was not disappointed. The sword is beautiful. The axe feels great in the hand. And the knife was stolen by the wife and now lives in the kitchen. Excellent quality and service as usual.
Nice display sword, a good example of a Spatha! My only complaints are slight cosmetic damage to the handle and blade as well as a few places where the glue has overflowed out of the scabbard
Raven delivered a beautiful Spatha and also a free large Seax. The spatha has a great functionable weight and is really easy to use. A couple of other clients have complained about slightly protruding pins on the hilt. These are not on the grip just the pommel on mine and hardly protrude at all. This just makes the weapon even more authentic. I love the blade. Just the right size. Thanks to everyone involved. Great service as usual. Because it was a big birthday my wife also bought me a claymore and pizza axe from Raven

John Barnett are reviewed as over weight stainless lumps, not so, its balanced and cuts well enough for something alot cheaper than some brands. The fittings are tight, unlike more expensive brands. The balance is good too. For cutting they work well enough and easier to keep maintained
Bought this as an example of the weapon Viking era swords were based on. Great sword, Great value for money.
Wonderfully balanced, the handle is very comfortable to hold and swing, very well crafted and a lovely addition to my collection. The 2 small studs in the handle unfortunately very slightly protrude. Having a sheaf with the sword is a major asset. Thank you
