Originating in the Heian Period (c. 8th-12th century CE), the Tanto is one of the iconic traditionally made blades carried by the Samurai in feudal Japan. Tanto were commonly used as a sidearm alongside a sword, namely Katana or Tachi. They were also carried for use in self defence and the Onna-musha (warrior women) who fought alongside Samurai in times of war were explicitly trained in their use.
Named after the infamous Japanese pirates that terrorised the coasts of China and Korea from the 13th-17th centuries, this Tanto is a seriously high quality piece, featuring a hand finished wooden saya (scabbard) with ornate brass fittings, genuine rayskin handle and a paper-cutting sharp high carbon steel blade with full tang. Complete with a wooden presentation case, this is a truly outstanding piece and one of the highest quality offerings we have here at Raven Forge.
Approximate specifications are as follows:
Overall length: 45cm
Blade length: 28cm
Materials: High carbon steel, brass fittings, wood scabbard, cotton wrapped rayskin handle, wooden presentation box
Edge: sharp
