About the Prize: Hnefatafl, the Viking Board Game
Long before chess reached Scandinavia, the Vikings were playing Hnefatafl, often called "King's Table". It's a game of strategy for two players on a grid: one side defends their king at the centre of the board and tries to escape to a corner, while the other side, usually with twice as many pieces, tries to surround and capture him. Boards and playing pieces have been found at Viking-age sites across Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland. A hand-crafted Hnefatafl set is a beautiful piece of living history and a brilliant game to bring out at the table, whether you're a Viking history fan or a board game lover.
