Originating in the Heian Period (c. 8th-12th century CE), the Tanto is one of the iconic traditionally made blades carried by the Samurai in feudal Japan. Predominantly used for stabbing, but also capable of delivering devastating slashes, Tanto were commonly used as a sidearm alongside the longer Katana or Tachi. They were also carried for use in self defence and the Onna-musha (warrior women) who fought alongside Samurai in times of war were explicitly trained in their use.
This fine example features a 1065 high carbon steel blade that ends in a sharp point, and a red saya (scabbard) with an image of Ryūjin, legendary Japanese dragon-god of the sea.
