Our Kriga axe is based on the well-known Dane axe. It has a shorter haft so is ideal for carry long distances; an axe of these measurements would have traditionally been used for not only close combat situations, but also tree felling and camp building.
This Kriga comes burnt black - it's a old blacksmiths trick to smooth the handle and prevent getting blisters whilst they hammer all day. It wraps the wood in a layer of carbon that's highly resistant to mould, insects, water and even fire. It also hardens the wood, making it less likely to crack or splinter. This process is called "Charring" - burning and rubbing in oil whilst the wood is still hot/warm.
The Kriga is made from hardened high carbon steel with a 3mm blunt edge, although it would hold an edge if sharpened. The haft is made from stained English Ash.
